The Bald Head Island Boathouse was a historic structure that sat at the mouth of the Cape Fear River on Smith Island. It was originally built by the US Lighthouse Service in 1915. It was a one-story, side-gabled structure and sat amongst the salt marshes on wooden pilings. In 1997, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Sadly, in September 2018, the Boathouse was destroyed by Hurricane Florence. All that remains are timbers spread across the original pilings. (Source: Wikipedia)
